Transportation by air

Air transportation is of principal importance for the Republic of Tajikistan, which has no direct connection with the sea and well-developed network of motorways. Today, it is precisely the aviation that is sort of a “bridge” connecting the country with the outside world. Transportation by air is carried out by the State Unitary Air Enterprise “Tajik Air”.
Today the Air Company undertakes regular flights from Moscow to Dushanbe (1 flight daily, 1 commercial flight weekly), to Almaty (3 flights weekly), Novosibirsk (3 flights weekly), Bishkek (3 flights weekly), Samara (2 flights weekly), Ekaterinburg (3 flights weekly), St. Petersburg (1 flight weekly), Volgograd (1 flight weekly), Munich (1 flight weekly), Istambul (1 flight weekly), Shardja via Delhi (1 flight weekly), Urumchi (1 flight weekly), Tehran (1 flight weekly), Khudjand (3 flights daily), Khorog (3 flights weekly), Garm and of Kulob (1 flight daily). There are flights undertaken from Khudjand Airport to Moscow, Ekaterinburg, Novosibirsk, Bishkek, Almaty, Meshkhed; from Kulob Airport - to Moscow; from Kurgan-Tube Airport - to Almaty and Bishkek. Besides, the number of flights can be reduced or increased depending on the passengers flow. The flights are undertaken by both Dushanbe and Kudjand Air Companies “Tojikiston” and Vnukovo, Pulkovo, Samara, Ural, Amaty and Bishkek Airlines.

Motor transport

Transport is an integral part of economy and plays an exclusively important role. It can be considered as the main element of the production infrastructure. Its special role can be explained by the mountain landscape dominating in the Republic and by the significant distance from central countries. For its short history the Republic of Tajikistan has turned from the country with caravan roads into the country with modern mass land and air transportation.

The length of roads of the general usage being on the balance of the Ministry of transport and communication is 13803 km, of which: 3887 km with asphaltic concrete pavement; 2618 km with gravel surface; 1096 km are earth roads. The total number of bridges is 2157 with the total length of 37139,5 m. 4878 km of all the network of automobile roads are of republican importance and 8925 km are of the local importance.

Railway Transport

Railway transport has a strategic importance, as international transportations are mainly implemented with its help. Tajik railway consists of three sections, having no connection to each other. Communication between them is carried out via railway network of Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. The total length of the railway network is 9507 km, the total amount of transportations for 2006 is 13938,6 thousand of tons.

The main part of these ways is situated in the southern part of the country. It connects the capital of the Republic with industrial zones of Hissar and Vakhsh valleys and with extern world. In 1999 the construction of the railway Kurgan-Tube-Kulob was completed.

The trains go regulary according their routes: Dushanbe - Moscow, Kulob-Moscow, Khudjand-Saratov, Dushanbe-Kanibadam and Kurgan-Tube-Kanibadam.
The main share of all international cargo transportations fall for railway transportation.
